Kari Kristensen was born in small town Ontario, but she has spent the majority of her adult life in British Columbia, among the mountains. They figure prominently in her work, and she believes the natural environment to be more advanced and beautiful than anything we can invent.
Canada has a rich history of landscape painting and from a young age, Kristensen studied and wanted to contribute to this pictorial history. As a printmaker primarily, she expresses herself through a series of lines and thousands of tiny dots carved into a linoleum surface, prior to printing by hand on paper. What is at first quite clearly black and white lines, further unravels itself the longer you spend with the work, revealing infinite detail to the landscape, playing with what seems familiar, and exalting it. Her printmaking has expanded into murals, and a number of other collaborations on varied media, but no matter how the medium might change, this carefully honed technique and respect for the natural world remains constant.
